Staff Interview: Cormac Molloy – Senior Analyst

July 11, 2023

Meet Cormac Molloy, Senior Analyst here at Bluebox. We sat down with Cormac for a second time to get to know him a bit better on both a professional and personal level. We learn a bit more about his role since he started working at Bluebox and desire to work in corporate finance, his favourite part about working in M&A, and much more!

Can you tell us a bit about your role at Bluebox?

I’m a Senior Analyst on the deal team and have been working at Bluebox for (coming up to) three years. Our primary focus is sell-side M&A, and the main aspects of my role are to help manage this exercise for our clients; prepare the investor material, research and analysis; and coordinate between all parties throughout the deal to facilitate a smooth and efficient process.

Have you always wanted to work in Corporate Finance and if so, what drew you to the profession? If not, what other career paths were you interested in?

Since school, Economics has always been my favourite subject, and when I studied it at Newcastle University, I got really into my financial modules. A career in the dealmaking industry combines quantitative and technical expertise with an ultimate focus on people, so the field very much appealed to me from an early stage. Also, my childhood ambition of becoming a fighter pilot was shot down in flames by my first visit to an optician.

What is your favourite part about working in M&A?

The variety of businesses and people you work with daily. Being at the interface of investors and companies in a dynamic UK middle-market means you are constantly encountering different business models, investment strategies, and the interesting people behind them.

What is one thing people don’t know about you that they would be surprised to find out?

Thanks to an enforced extra-curricular programme at school, I’m a reasonably capable juggler.

If you could start your own business right now, what would it be and why?

An advisory practice hardly being an acceptable answer, I would say a real-life, commercialised ‘School of Rock’.

If your friends were asked to describe you in three words, what would they say?

Reliable, relaxed, enthusiastic.

Who inspires you the most on a daily basis?

I’ve been rediscovering Jimi Hendrix recently (and desecrating some of his material on my guitar). He was incredibly good and one of the artists that got me into music.

What is your ideal way to spend a Saturday?

A morning on the bike in the Surrey Hills, followed by an afternoon of rugby. Throw a barbecue in there too and I don’t think it gets much better. Unfortunately, the CFA has other ideas.

Quick fire:

  1. What is the top thing on your bucket list? See some orcas in the wild.
  2. Are you a morning or evening person? Morning, before cars get on the road.
  3. Best meal you’ve ever eaten in a restaurant? This beef rib dish I recently had at an unassuming “world tapas” restaurant in Bristol, which has remained on my mind since.
  4. If you could only bring one item on a desert island, what would it be? A bottle of barbecue sauce.
