Seb Baxter-Allen – Staff Interview

September 4, 2019

This month we interview Seb who joined us back in June and shares his background and motivations behind starting a career in Corporate Finance.

  1. What was your background prior to joining Bluebox?

I graduated from Cardiff University after studying Economics and completing a few internships in finance and insurance. I then went travelling for a year, spending 6 months in the French skiing result of Meribel as a chef. Before joining Bluebox I was working in data analytics for a programmatic advertising firm.

  1. What were your motivations behind choosing a career in Corporate Finance?

I’ve always been interested in current financial affairs and international market movements. However, I began to learn about corporate finance when I joined my university’s Finance and Trading Society . This experience sparked my interest, and gave me the understanding that corporate finance is an incredibly stimulating and rewarding atmosphere to work in.

  1. What does a typical day look like for you and what are you currently working on?

One of the best things about corporate finance is that every day is different, giving you exposure to a variety of businesses to work with. I’m really lucky at the moment as I have a few clients across different industries going through different stages in the process.

  1. What is your biggest achievement to date – personal or professional?

My biggest personal achievement to date would have been organising the Cardiff University Football Club to run the Cardiff Half Marathon. It was a real challenge to run it myself, but even more so getting 50 boys to do it! In the end we raised over £2,000 for a very good cause.

  1. What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Don’t ever stop learning and growing as a person

  1. If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be?

It would have to be the ability to fly. You could travel the world, see what no one else has ever seen and never have to take the tube again.

  1. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

It would have to be Zurich. I’ve been there before and love the food, atmosphere and people. It’s also close enough to the Alps which would be amazing to have on your doorstep.

  1. What would you do if you were the one survivor in a plane crash?

Find a football and name it Wilson

Quick fire

  1. Favourite sport?

Football

  1. Any hidden talents?

I can ski quite well

  1. Name an item you couldn’t live without?

Headphones

  1. How would your friends describe you?

Easy to get along with

  1. Would you rather wake up to an air horn blowing in your ear every day, or wake up and have to run 4 miles every day?

Given that I’m doing a half marathon in 6 weeks it would (reluctantly) have to be the running.
