Lauren Smithie – Staff Interview

January 21, 2020

This month we interview Lauren Smithie who joined Bluebox in September last year. She shares her background and motivations behind joining Bluiebox.

  1. What was your background prior to joining Bluebox?

I grew up in Cape Town, South Africa, and graduated from the University of Cape Town with a bachelor’s degree in Law and Media and an Honours degree in Media Theory and Practice. During my honours degree I interned at a digital marketing company which is where my passion for marketing grew. I worked part-time during my studies where I gained experience in the service and events industry and felt that combining events and marketing would be an ideal career path to follow. After graduating I decided to teach English in Thailand before coming to London and subsequently joining Bluebox.

  1. What were your motivations behind choosing a career in Marketing within Bluebox?

What attracted me to Bluebox was the ability to gain experience working at a company where my responsibilities are broad, allowing me to develop skills in a wide range of roles, while at the same time developing further marketing techniques. Bluebox has an open-minded approach which is always a good environment to grow in. Essentially, the world revolves around business so having the opportunity to learn about the world of corporate finance is pretty interesting as well as learning about if from a company that is known for its market-leading pre-sale planning.

  1. What is your biggest achievement to date – personal or professional?

Personal – I would say teaching English and Math to 35 Thai kindergartners (who barely understood a word of English) without assistance, as well as sailing for South Africa in two world championships.

Professional – Graduating with a 2:1 Honours degree while interning and working at the same time.

  1. What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

To just do it. Uncertainty is scary but every time I’ve been hesitant about something and then eventually bite the bullet and do it, it usually works out for the better.

  1. What does a day at Bluebox look like for you?

Every day is different and with each new day comes a new challenge, giving me exposure to a range of work. I would say I mostly work on creating marketing material and planning events as well as handle any ad hoc duties. I also assist the Finance team in any way, shape and form.

  1. Other than London, where would you like to live/work and why?

I’ve always wanted to live in California, but I’ve never actually been. From the places I have been, I would have to say Bali. It is like a slice of heaven with year-round amazing weather, a laid-back lifestyle, the friendliest locals and the most beautiful natural vegetation. However, my family are in Cape Town so I’m also drawn to the idea of living back there at some point.
