John Tollemache – Staff Interview

October 30, 2019

This month we interview John, known as Johnny here at Bluebox, who joined us at the beginning of August and shares his background and motivations behind starting a career in Corporate Finance.

  1. What was your background prior to joining Bluebox?

Before joining Bluebox, I graduated from Bristol University and subsequently from Imperial College after completing my Masters in 2016. After uni, I joined the world of Consulting, initially with the US firm FTI Consulting, specialising in their M&A strategic communications division. I also have worked in more general Management and Strategy consulting, largely with the company Alchemmy. I helped to build and launch a B2B business tech start-up and was seconded for a year to an international transport company.

  1. What were your motivations behind choosing a career in Corporate Finance?

I wanted to take the part that I loved most about consulting: solving complex problems for different companies and people daily but applying it in on a more tangible basis. Looking to sell a company is often the biggest challenge that a business owner will face, and It has been amazing to help businesses through this to help realise their objectives.

  1. What is your biggest achievement to date – personal and professional?

Driving nearly 15,000 miles to Mongolia in a 1.2 litre yellow Suzuki Alto to raise money for the fantastic children’s charity, ROKPA. We broke down several times, (once for 3 days in the middle of the Dasht-e Lut desert in Iran!), were chased by wild dogs, had our car towed, changed nearly 15 tyres and were towed almost 700 miles through Kazakhstan. We did raise £20,000 for the charity in the end which made it all worth it!

  1. What is the most valuable piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Investing in knowledge pays the best interest

  1. What do you like best about your position at the company?

A great deal of things. Probably the diversity of a typical day. I could be helping to advise a leading facilities management business based in the Middle East, to working on a sale of a leading international Ghanaian payment company to then helping fundraise for an innovative UK healthcare start-up. It’s very varied. We also sit in a privileged position to really to get to know and understand a company and industry. It’s been great to be able to develop this sector knowledge and understanding.

  1. What is your ideal way to spend a Saturday?

It really depends on the Saturday and where I am. Mainly to be able to just hang out with friends. Bring a dog into the mix and that’s a pretty awesome day in my book

  1. What would you do if you won the lottery?

I am totally obsessed with travelling, so I think that would be my first port of call. It has always been an aim of mine to drive from London to Cape Town so I think that I would start investigating that. I think I’d probably also buy a pretty rocking house by the Amalfi coast in Italy – meraviglioso!

Rapid Fire:

  1. If you could be anyone for the day, who would you be?

Owen Farrell on the 2nd November when he will be holding up the Rugby World Cup Trophy!

  1. If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

Definitely time travel. Even just to get back a few minutes of each day.

  1. If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Sausage rolls – I practically live off them already!

  1. If an actor were to play you in a movie, who would you want it to be?

A whole load of people, none of whom look anything like me. Would start with a young Jude Law (before hair loss!) but I’d settle for Colin Firth.
