Jack Bettell – Staff Interview

November 23, 2018

Jack Questions:

In this month’s staff interview we get to know Jack Bettell, Senior Analyst. We find out his background and his motivations behind choosing a career in Corporate Finance at Bluebox.
  1. What was your background prior to joining Bluebox?

I studied at the London School of Economics and graduated with upper second class honours in Accounting and Finance. During my time at LSE I completed several internships including one at a corporate finance company specialising in the provision of capital for early-stage companies, and one at an ed-tech start-up firm.

  1. What were your motivations behind choosing a career in Corporate Finance?

I decided I wanted to work in an environment that was focused on strategic outcomes for businesses and where I would be in direct contact with the decision makers of a business. Coming up with innovative and commercial solutions to really benefit clients has been the most rewarding aspect of the job, and something I probably underestimated before I joined Bluebox!

  1. What does a typical day look like for you, and what are you currently working on?

There is no such thing as a typical day for me – and that is one of the great things about corporate finance! I have a few clients at different stages in the process; a couple currently going through our Blue Diamond pre-sale planning programme, a couple where we are actively reaching out to potential investors, and a couple that are slightly more advanced where we are negotiating deal terms.

  1. Other than London, what city would you like to live/work in and why?

New York – there is so much going on in the city! Such a buzz, great food, and friendly people.

  1. What gets you out of bed in the morning?

I always go to the gym first thing in the morning. It’s my time to myself and sets me up perfectly for the day ahead.

  1. Given a chance, who would you like to be for a day?

I’d be Elvis Presley. Be interesting to see the world from the point of view of the King.

  1. What is the most valuable piece of advice you’ve ever received?

“Pressure is a privilege” – feeling pressure means you’ve got purpose and something worth working for, so embrace it!

  1. Any hidden talents?

  1. Favourite sport?

  1. What’s something you could eat for a week straight?

  1. Would you rather wake up to an air horn blowing in your ear every day, or wake up and have to run 4 miles every day?

Has to be the run!
