Staff Interview: Tim Spink

At Bluebox, we are a corporate finance advisory firm in London specialising in mid-market M&A and business sale advisory. Our team works closely with founders, shareholders and management teams across the UK, supporting them through business exits, company sales and long-term value creation.

In this staff interview, we speak with Tim Spink, our head of partnerships, his role within our mid-market corporate finance advisory practice, what it’s like advising business owners on selling a private company in the UK, and how we support founders as trusted M&A advisors throughout the transaction lifecycle.

From preparing a business for sale to working alongside entrepreneurs at key moments in his journey, this conversation offers an inside look at life within a corporate finance boutique in London and the people behind our client-first approach.

Can you tell us about your role with Bluebox….

The vast majority of our business at Bluebox is generated through the relationships we have with partnership organisations. Wherever possible it is a two-way process. So my role, as Head of Strategic Partnerships, is to nurture these relationships and work to build a business ecosystem around Bluebox.

What attracted you to working with Bluebox?

Bluebox is exceptionally well placed for mid-market M&A, we bring experience, that you would typically only find on large transactions, to OMBs (Owner Managed Businesses), making a considerable difference to the success of the deals done in this space.

Can you walk us through your professional background and how it led you to Bluebox?

I was part of the founding team of a US fintech, Allocations, a disruptive fund administration (3.0) startup, focussed on automating the process of setting up SPVs and funds (in minutes not weeks), and managing them through their lifecycle. Being a mathematics graduate (from Exeter University), I have largely gravitated towards finance, which has led to consulting for other fintechs as well as making many angel investments along the way (my portfolio is heavily weighted towards space, aerospace and other adjacent technologies). What sparked my desire to work in the M&A industry, was witnessing the complete lifecycle of business through my work at Allocations and through investing. Bluebox is a superb outfit to be part of, and I am extremely grateful to be here.

What’s a project or engagement you’ve worked on that you’re particularly proud of, and why?

I have thoroughly enjoyed presenting to some of the peer2peer boards as well as to the Health Innovation Wessex Shift Programme, they have been great opportunities to talk to larger audiences, as well as to listen to their feedback and thoughts on M&A and how best to prepare for a process.

A challenge is an opportunity for growth, be intentional daily once you have set your strategy.

  • What skill do you think is most critical for success?

Listening.

  • Favourite type of project to work on (and why)?

Anything to do with a space or aerospace company – I am fascinated by the technology and engineering in these sectors and what it is helping us to achieve.

  • When you’re not working on client projects, how do you like to spend your time?

Climbing mountains and sporting pursuits in the countryside.
