Entrepreneur Interview: Wendy Powell

March 6, 2023

As part of our upcoming International Women’s Day event, we had the pleasure of getting to know one our guest speakers Wendy Powell, Founder & CEO of leading global medically recommended digital health tech platform, MUTU System. Since it’s establishment in 2009, MUTU System has helped more than 90,000 Mums to feel amazing in and about their bodies. Wendy is also on the Women’s Development Board of charity Microloan Foundation, working to improve education, opportunities, and empowerment for mothers.

Let’s start at the beginning. What inspired you to launch your own business?

I know how it feels not to trust my body. To feel scared, uncertain and like my body failed me. Even as a highly certified personal trainer when I had my babies, I was not prepared physically or mentally – For the disconnect, the powerlessness and the feelings of being broken, of having failed. Nothing worked, looked, or felt like I wanted it to, and I felt out of control.

I developed a programme and a system to reclaim the freedom and confidence I knew I deserved as a woman and a mother, and MUTU is the result. I built this because what I needed, hadn’t been there. I built it so you don’t have to feel that way.

Describe your business in one sentence.

We educate and empower mothers to feel better in and about their bodies

How important is company culture at MUTU System and what is your top tip to get it right?

Super important. We don’t do Diva’s. I lead the business, but we all collaborate respectfully, and cooperate and support each other fully. Communication is open and clear. We always assume miscommunication over malice – just talk to each other.

Our core values are the vital and timeless guiding principles for our company. These core values define our culture and who we are. We thrive, hire, review, reward, recognise and operate based on these values.

What impact would you like to have on women across the world through your business?

We believe women’s voices are needed today more than ever, and that far too many talented and brilliant female humans are being held back from becoming their best selves, by avoidable physical symptoms and low body confidence. Women are putting up with issues and feelings they shouldn’t have, whilst striving for unrealistic ideals. We want to change this.

What plans do you have for the MUTU System over the next two years?

Working with Global Impact Partners and collaborators to scale MUTU to millions of women around the world

What is one piece of advice you would give to women considering joining the Femtech industry?

Provide a real solution to a real need. Build trust. Build community. If you expect women to entrust their wellness, their health concerns and their data – you better do right by them.
