Cameron Messenger – Staff Interview

January 17, 2019

In this month’s staff interview we get to know Cameron Messenger, Analyst. We find out his background and his motivations behind choosing a career in Corporate Finance at Bluebox.

  1. What was your background prior to joining Bluebox?

I joined Bluebox having finished my Master’s degree in Finance from Durham University, where I achieved a Distinction. Prior to that, I worked for a client-advisory firm that specialises in wealth management and business exit planning. I completed my undergraduate degree in Economics from the University of East Anglia, where I achieved a Starred First.

  1. What were your motivations behind choosing a career in Corporate Finance?

My interest in corporate finance was first piqued during my undergraduate degree where I was exposed to topics such as the cost of capital, capital structure and the valuation of a specific project or business. From that point on, my academic and professional careers have been aligned towards developing my understanding of financial markets and corporate financial decision-making.

I think the real appeal of a career in corporate finance is the ability to influence and advise upon key strategic and financial decisions at the firm level, whilst factoring in and adjusting for the broader macroeconomic environment in which the firm operates.

  1. What is your biggest achievement to date – personal or professional?

Personal – achieving a Starred First in my undergraduate economics degree. Although I had all but secured a first early on in my final year, I continued to push and challenge myself, and ended up with a degree classification I didn’t know existed!

Professional – playing a significant role in the development of a new start-up, that within six months was taken from nothing but an idea to being an established business exhibiting at the UK’s major accountancy conference, alongside some of the biggest names in the industry.

  1. What gets you out of bed in the morning?

A lack of interest in sleep and a general curiosity about what it is in store for the day ahead.

  1. Other than London, what city would you like to live/work in and why?

Edinburgh. I love the architecture and general vibe of the city. It would also be nice to be much closer to the Highlands.

  1. If you could be given a superpower for the day, what would you choose and why?

The ability to fly, so I could look down on earth from outer space. It’s always good to get some perspective!

  1. What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Fall in love with the process and the results will take care of themselves.
