A Day in the Life of an Intern at Bluebox

July 29, 2022

We sat down with our most recent intern Ollie to find out what a day in the life at Bluebox looks like. We get to know him a bit better by finding out how he landed the internship, his experience working as an intern at Bluebox and some advice for university students contemplating work placements.

What was your background prior to interning at Bluebox?

I joined Bluebox after finishing my second year at Exeter University studying BA Geography. Prior to starting at Exeter, I was at Merchant Taylors’ School and did Geography, History and Politics at A-Level. I didn’t have any experience or background in corporate finance but have always been interested in business and this sector specifically. All my past work experience has been in the hospitality sector, working as a chalet host for 3 ½ months and I have been an event assistant at a wedding venue for 3 years in my holidays.

How did you land this internship?

I found Bluebox whilst searching for internships for my second-year summer. I applied through the website and subsequently met Tracy and did an interview. I was offered the role soon after and jumped at the opportunity.

What does an average day/week look like?

On average I usually get to be in the office 3 days a week which has been fantastic to be with the team. It has been great to get to know everyone in-person as opposed to through a screen. Being in the office has meant I have got to know the wider team rather than just the analysts I work closely with day-to-day.

Oscar, Cormac and Elliot (some of the analysts) get me involved with research and clients, which is a brilliant way of learning the ins and outs of the M&A process. The work includes putting together spreadsheets, research, helping with IMs and much more. I have been able to experience every aspect of the M&A process.

What do you wish you’d known before you started?

Not being from a business/economic background I wish I knew a bit more about the details of the M&A process. However, this has not been an issue as the team has been fantastic at integrating me into the process and sending me useful resources to delve into beyond the work I am given.

Do you feel the internship has helped you develop practical skills and what aspect of your internship have you enjoyed the most?

My practical skills have certainly developed throughout my time here. The work I have been given has helped me to develop a wide range skills. From things as simple as excel shortcuts and formatting, through to attention to detail and articulation of research. I have enjoyed learning and improving in all these areas and more. I have also enjoyed being integrated into the process and being given meaningful pieces of work. I think more than anything, being an intern at Bluebox, you never feel like just another cog in a machine.

How did you find the work culture at Bluebox?

The work culture is hugely positive at Bluebox. The team have been very supportive and inclusive. From what I have experienced, the team are very collaborative and constructive when it comes to work, and it’s been a great environment to be a part of. I would like to think this has had a positive impact on how I work and will continue to work going forwards.

What opportunities do you feel you have gained from interning at Bluebox?

Interning at Bluebox has opened far more opportunities for me and being there feels like I have taken a step forward in my career. Being at the 10th Anniversary Party showed me how successful Paul and Bluebox has been over the past decade, and they are clearly doing a lot of things right! The network that Bluebox has built is a testament to their success and something that I am very glad to have had the opportunity to be a part of.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking about joining Bluebox as an intern?

Do it! You get exposed to so much – making it a brilliant place to learn. It’s a fantastic experience with a great team so I would thoroughly recommend it.

Rapid Fire:

  1. Favourite event you attended whilst at Bluebox? The 10-year Anniversary Party
  2. If you could have one superpower, what would it be? Definitely time travel
  3. Dream job one day? A successful entrepreneur
  4. If you could have dinner with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be? Elon Musk would be crazy but fascinating
