Walking the D-Day Beaches in Aid of Healthier Heroes

Friday, 12 June 2026

Earlier this month, our COO, Tracy Kingsnorth had the privilege of taking part in a three-day walking tribute across the D-Day beaches in Normandy in Aid of Healthier Heros. Tracy talks about the experience in this article…

When I agreed to take part in this challenge, I don’t think anything could have truly prepared me for what those three days would feel like. Over the course of the walk, we covered around 30 kilometres a day, crossing all five landing beaches and treading the same ground where so many lives were lost on 6 June 1944. It’s hard to find the words to do it justice.

Normandy was full of visitors commemorating the anniversary, many dressed in period uniforms, with vintage military vehicles lining the roads and historic aircraft flying overhead. Everywhere you looked, there was a powerful sense of remembrance and respect.

The walk was led by Ant Middleton and supported by a fantastic team of former military personnel from Challenge the Wild, who shared their knowledge and perspectives throughout the journey. Hearing the stories behind the events, while standing in the places where they happened, brought history to life in a way that books and documentaries simply can’t.

At each beach, we stopped for a simple lamp-lighting ceremony. A single lamp, a bagpiper playing, and a few moments of quiet reflection created some of the most memorable moments of the trip. They were powerful reminders of the courage, sacrifice and resilience shown by so many people more than eighty years ago.

Our final stop was Pegasus Bridge, one of the first key objectives secured during the Allied invasion. Standing there, reflecting on what those soldiers achieved and the risks they took, was incredibly humbling.

The walk was organised in support of Healthier Heroes, a charity that does outstanding work supporting veterans through housing, rehabilitation, education and employment support, mental health services, and social inclusion programmes. If you would like to sponsor my fundraising efforts, the link is here and I would be incredibly grateful for your support.

Taking part in this challenge gave me an even greater appreciation for the support many veterans need after leaving service. The experience also left me with a few thoughts that feel just as relevant in business as they are in life:

  • Great achievements rarely happen without preparation, teamwork and determination.
  • Resilience is often built long before it’s tested.
  • The best leaders are often those who put the mission and the people around them before themselves.
  • Taking time to reflect on the sacrifices of others gives valuable perspective on our own challenges.

Most importantly, the walk was a reminder of how fortunate we are, and how important it is that we continue to remember those who gave so much.
