Edward Shurville-Darlington – Staff Interview

December 2, 2019

This month we interview Edward Shurville-Darlington, known as Ed here at Bluebox, who joined us at the end of August. He shares his background and motivations behind starting a career in Corporate Finance.

  1. What was your background prior to joining Bluebox?

I worked at KPMG for 7 years where I qualified as a Charted Accountant with the ICAEW and worked in a number of departments including Audit, Accounting Advisory, and Deal Advisory in Watford, San Francisco, and London! Before this I graduated from The University of Birmingham with a degree in Economics.

  1. What were your motivations behind choosing a career in Corporate Finance?

For me it was the opportunity to work with incredible business owners and entrepreneurs from a range of fascinating industries, to develop and execute their exit strategy, fund raise, or expansion plans. The sale of your business (in full or in part) is often the most significant decision you will make as a business owner – to be a small part of that, as an advisor, is an extremely exciting and rewarding position to be in.

  1. What is your biggest achievement to date – personal or professional?

Personally, I would say moving to San Francisco. Starting fresh in a new city and country where I knew no one, except for my wife, was really challenging but extremely rewarding. It was great to explore a new part of the world and make truly lifelong friends.

  1. What do you like best about your position at the company?

As Senior Manager I get to combine the best parts of client delivery, working with amazing business owners towards a lucrative exit, and team development, working with the very talented Bluebox team as they start their career in Corporate Finance.

  1. What time does your alarm go off in the morning and how do you prepare for the day?

My alarm is currently my daughter, so it varies day to day! I prepare for each day by getting her dressed and ready before playing or reading her a book – current favourite is 100 Dogs by   Michael Whaite.

  1. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

Anywhere by the sea, river or lake! There is a real energy that you get from being outdoors and connected to your surroundings so what better way to achieve that, than to swim, paddle board or sail on a regular basis.

Rapid Fire:

  1. If you jumped on a plane right now, where would it be heading? The French Alps – always keen for a ski trip.
  2. If you could be any animal, which would you be? Black Bear living in Yosemite National Park!
  3. Favourite Sport? Skiing and football
  4. If you could have one superpower, what would It be? Bernard’s watch (ability to pause time!) – think of how much you could get done!
